María Peña Coto (ES)

Artist

María Peña Coto, also known by her artist name Mapecoo, has an extensive CV that includes international exhibitions and street art projects. About her works, she says that their “raison d’être” is to create curiosity and pose questions, fostering dialogue and promoting social change. She has received numerous scholarships and recognition for her artistic accomplishments around the world, particularly focusing on social challenges and the representation of personal stories. She works multidisciplinary using various mediums, from traditional techniques like painting and sculpture to street art, performance, and participatory art.

María resides between Paris and Copenhagen but works on projects worldwide, having exhibited and worked in places like New York, Lisbon, Bandung (Indonesia), Beijing, London, Port-au-Prince (Haiti), Madrid, Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), and Paris.

Peña has a Master’s degree in International Cooperation and a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts both from Complutense University of Madrid, which included exchanges at the University of the Arts London and Escola de Comunicações e Artes da Universidade de São Paulo. Her works are part of international collections, including Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias and the Jorge Padilla Blanco Foundation.
