Deadline for applications is Wednesday 26 March 2025.

~

ABOUT THE RESIDENCY
In recent years, the intersection of art and science, particularly physics, has gained increasing prominence in artistic practices and exhibitions. This residency aims to build on that momentum by fostering creative dialogue between artists and leading international researchers in quantum physics.

By breaking down the traditional boundaries between scientific inquiry and artistic exploration, we aim to inspire new ways of thinking and to encourage cross-disciplinary discoveries. This programme offers artists and scientists a unique opportunity to collaborate and challenge one another and generate innovative insights and new knowledge for both fields.

Residency Start Date: Fall 2025
Duration: 6 months (residency) + 6 months (follow-up programme including curatorial sparring and exhibition preparation)

~

WHO CAN APPLY?
The residency is open to professional artists from all disciplines and practices. However, due to visa regulations and the duration of the residency, only artists from an EU/EØS country are eligible to apply.

The residency supports emerging and mid-career artists.

The residency is available for one artist or a collective (maximum of 3 people). Please note that the residency budget is fixed and will not increase with the size of the group.

At all participating institutions, diversity and inclusion are deeply valued. We welcome applications from people of all ethnicities, genders, identities, and sexual orientations, including people with disabilities. Where the qualifications of applications are equal, priority will be given to artists from underrepresented groups.

~

Location: Artists are expected to spend most of their residency at either Art Hub Copenhagen or Heidelberg University’s facilities, aiming to spend three months in each place. Short trips unrelated to the residency may be accommodated with prior approval.

Collaboration: To the extent that it is possible, artists are encouraged to engage with other residents at Art Hub Copenhagen and participate in collaborative and communication activities.

Artists are also encouraged to join transdisciplinary workshops with scientists, facilitated by both Art Hub Copenhagen and Heidelberg University.

Meetings & Mentorship: Throughout the course of residency, artists must participate in meetings with Jacob Lillemose (project manager at Art Hub Copenhagen) and Dr. Lisa Ringena (project manager at CRC ISOQUANT, Heidelberg). The meetings will involve representatives from the Niels Bohr Institute and ZKM.

Communication: Artists must agree that their residency will be communicated through Art Hub Copenhagen’s and Heidelberg University’s websites, newsletters, and social media channels.

Public Presentations: During the program, artists are expected to present the result or process of the residency in both Heidelberg and Copenhagen through public events. The format and scale of these presentations are open and will be decided in collaboration with the partnering institutions.

Publication Opportunities: Both institutions aim to produce a joint publication at the end of the program and will also encourage and support the development of online publishing formats.

~

PROGRAM BENEFITS
Stipend: Artists will receive a monthly stipend (2.000€) to cover living expenses during the residency period (first 6 months of the program). If childcare is needed, we offer access to facilities at Heidelberg University.

Accommodation: Art Hub Copenhagen will facilitate finding a rented room/apartment practically located in Copenhagen and cover the costs. The CRC ISOQUANT will offer and cover costs for accommodation in a fully equipped apartment centrally located in Heidelberg.

Workspace: Art Hub Copenhagen will offer a studio and access to workshops, including metal, wood, printing, assembly, and digital workshop facilities. Moreover, Art Hub Copenhagen will assist in finding other relevant production facilities if needed. The CRC ISOQUANT will grant full access to all university research facilities, laboratories, and a shared office space. Heidelberg University will provide working facilities specific to the hosting institutes.

Travel: The programme covers round-trip travel between Copenhagen and Heidelberg, with an emphasis on eco-friendly options such as train travel. Additionally, local commuting in Heidelberg and Copenhagen will be facilitated and covered by ISOQUANT and Art Hub, respectively.

Events and Public Presentation: Art Hub Copenhagen and ISOQUANT will take full responsibility for organizing and funding events during the residency, such as artist talks, as well as the final public presentations of the works in Copenhagen and Heidelberg. This includes covering the costs of supplies and materials for the artworks (up to 5.000 €), an exhibition fee of 2.500 € per exhibition, and transportation costs for both the artworks and the artists. Additionally, exhibition-related costs, such as room rental and materials, will be covered (up to 2.500 € per exhibition).

~

HOW TO APPLY

Applicants should submit:

Motivation letter and a brief proposal for a specific project, including ideas for public events (1-2 A4 pages)

CV (1 A4 page) and portfolio showcasing previous work (5–10 images)

Please e-mail all your application documents in one zipped folder, labelled “sciart_residency_lastname_firstname” to opencall-sciart@thphys.uni-heidelberg.de by Wednesday 26 March 2025 at 11.59 PM the latest.

If your .zip file exceeds 15MB, please provide a download link instead (Dropbox, WeTransfer, etc.).

Please direct any inquiries to opencall-sciart@thphys.uni-heidelberg.de.

Please note that re-applications from residency alumni are not accepted.
