Helga Reidemeister: Is this Fate + Q&A with Loretta Fahrenholz

In the spring 2024, the Art Hub Film Club at the Copenhagen cinema Vester Vov Vov is being presented by Berlin-based artist Loretta Fahrenholz, who will feature a selection of films that delve into the emergence of filmmaking during the 1970s and 1980s, spurred by the women’s liberation movements.

The screening series continues with Helga Reidemeister’s documentary Is this Fate. The film revolves around questions such as how can we raise non-violent people in a violent society? The documentary which was shot over many years follows a divorced mother, Irene Rakowitz who lives with her two youngest children in Märkisches Viertel, the biggest housing estate in West Berlin at the time (70ies). She has freed herself from her husband but struggles to escape the everyday violence of family life, in which conflicts escalate instead of abating.

In dialogue with one fractured family unit, filmmaker Helga Reidemeister points to the failures of the present in the hope of a fairer tomorrow.

The film is presented in German with English subtitles.

In spring 2024, the Art Hub Film Club, presented by artist Loretta Fahrenholz, will feature a selection of films that delve into the emergence of filmmaking during the 1970s and 1980s in Berlin, spurred by the women’s liberation movements. Female directors renegotiated the male dominated New German Cinema and experimented with highly subjective, wildly divers forms of filmic expression. All films are marked by their defiance of commercial norms, that seek to invent new languages of political filmmaking. By transferring these methods and narratives into contemporary culture Fahrenholz echo this tradition andcreates an overlap of temporalities.

ABOUT LORETTA FAHRENHOLZ

Loretta Fahrenholz is a filmmaker and visual artist based in Berlin. Her ongoing investigations into contemporary media conditions improvise a decidedly post-cinematic approach to film, exploring social reality today. Often referencing mainstream genres such as sci fi, rom com and fantasy, the artist constructs hybrid docu-narratives whereby the screen begins to function as an interface between subjects and institutions, the real and the programmed.

Fahrenholz’s work has been shown internationally, including solo exhibitions at Kunsthalle Bergen, Berlin (2023); Kölnischer Kunstverein (2022); n.b.k. – Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (2021); mumok – Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation, Vienna (2018); Fridericianum, Kassel (2016); Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2016) and Kunsthalle Zürich (2015). As well as film screenings at Ann Arbor Film Festival (2019, 2020, 2021); Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen (2014, 2020); Institute of Contemporary Arts, London (2019); Image Festival Toronto (2016); Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami (2015); and Anthology Film Archives, New York (2015).
