Talk: Reframing Narratives – Tinne Zenner in conversation with Jane Jin Kaisen

This conversation between Jane Jin Kaisen and Tinne Zenner is based on two artistic practices that both work with cinematic and spatial installations. How does the cinematic image work when it moves out of the cinema space and into the installation space? What sensory experiences arise when sound, image, and space are intertwined?

Kaisen and Zenner’s work are at different stages of their artistic research processes – six years after completing an artistic PhD and one year into a new one, respectively – but for both of them, the long, artistic investigation is the pivot point. The conversation shifts the focus from the formal framework of artistic research, and into the artistic practice itself: the works, the methods, and the studies that drive the work forward.

Based on audiovisual installations, the conversation examines how art can direct alternative narratives and challenge linear storytelling. It revolves around the relationship between camera, technology, and body, between presence and institutions, between personal relationships and state structures.

A common thread is translation – not only between languages ​​and media, but also between disciplines, forms of knowledge, and different ways of experiencing the world. Through shared fields of interest and different artistic methods, the conversation unfolds an investigation of how long-term artistic processes can create new ways of thinking about history, politics, and the audiovisual space.

ABOUT TINNE ZENNER
Tinne Zenner is a visual artist and filmmaker based in Copenhagen. Working with analogue film, 3D renderings and spatial installation, her work moves between the cinema and exhibition space while exploring the structures, in which layers of history, geopolitics and collective narratives are embedded. Her work is critically engaged with the structural traces of the Danish colonial past and present in Kalaallit Nunaat. Currently, her focus is on the ongoing neocolonial and invisible extraction of geological data.

In 2025 she received the Mads Øvlisen PhD Scholarship for her Practice-Based Artistic Research project: Immaterial Extraction: Data Extraction in Kalaallit Nunaat at Art Hub Copenhagen and Copenhagen University.

Her films have been shown at a number of international film festivals including New York Film Festival, CPH:DOX, Courtisane, EMAF, Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin, Image Forum Tokyo and EXiS Seoul, and her installation work exhibited at museums and exhibition spaces internationally at Reykjavik Art Museum, Nuuk Art Museum, Greenland National Museum, Gothenburg Kunsthal, Verksmiðjan á Hjalteyri, Tromsø Kunstforening and locally at Vermilion Sands, Kunsthal Kongegaarden, Møstings Hus and Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Denmark.

ABOUT JANE JIN KAISEN
Jane Jin Kaisen is known for her visually striking, multilayered, performative, poetic, and multi-voiced feminist works through which past and present are brought into relation. Engaging topics such as memory, migration, borders, and translation, she activates the field where lived experience and embodied knowledge intersect with larger political histories.

Kaisen was professor at the School of Media Arts, The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 2020-2026. She holds a PhD in Artistic Research from University of Copenhagen and an MFA from University of California Los Angeles. She participated in the Whitney Independent Study Program 2007-08.

Kaisen represented Korea at the 58th Venice Biennale with the film installation Community of Parting (2019). Her exhibition Community of Parting at Kunsthal Charlottenborg was awarded “Exhibition of the Year 2020” by International Association of Art Critics, Denmark. She is the recipient of Ole Haslund’s Artist Grant (2025), the Beckett-Prize (2023), the New Carlsberg Foundation Artist Grant (2023), and a 3-year work grant from the Danish Arts Foundation (2022).
