On Thursday, November 19, please join us for a very special edition of Partly, featuring the piano music of Federico Mompou played by James Rushford and a rare appearance of the beloved international sound art project Ora Clementi.
Ora Clementi is the duo of Canadian sound artist crys cole and Australian composer/performer James Rushford. Distinct, disorienting and highly performative, their work examines voice and vocal mirroring through preconscious speech processes and the codified abstraction of found texts, supported by a vast battery of handmade instruments, electronics, and hyper-colour processing.
Federico Mompou (1893-1987) was a Catalan composer who primarly wrote for piano. Rushford will perform selections from the piano cycle Musica Callada, widely considered his masterpiece. Though the music is inspired by impressionistic composers such as Debussy and Satie, it incorporates idiosyncratic elements of dissonance, hesitation, and Catalan folk song, making it feel both contemporary and out-of-time. This is incredible music that is performed far too infrequently. Rushford recorded a beautiful and spacious new version of the full cycle for Unseen Worlds in 2020.
As always, you don’t want to miss this event. If you do, it will be terrible for you, just awful.
Partly is curated by Ed Atkins and Steven Zultanski and hosted by Art Hub Copenhagen.
