The Novo Nordisk Foundation (NNF) is the primary funding source in Denmark for practice-based PhD scholarships, and to apply for a PhD grant from the NNF, two separate institutional hosting agreements are required: one hosting agreement from an art institution and one from a Danish university.

This year, Tinne Zenner, among others, will receive support for a PhD project, which will be anchored at IKK at the University of Copenhagen and AHC, respectively.

Zenner’s practice-based PhD project in artistic research Immaterial Extraction: Data Extraction in Kalaallit Nunaat will explore the continuous processes of mapping and extraction of geological data from Kalaallit Nunaat. In the history of Danish colonial ventures, the mapping of land has played a crucial role in the extraction of natural resources like oil, coal and cryolite from Kalaallit Nunaat. While traditional mining leaves visible traces on the surface of the earth, this research shifts focus to the less visible process of data extraction, particularly through new visualization technologies that explore the underground frontier, and examine its connections to neocolonial power dynamics, media technologies, and current geopolitics.

Lars Bang Larsen, Head of Art & Research at AHC, says:

“We are very pleased that Tinne Zenner has received support from the Novo Nordisk Foundation for her PhD Immaterial Extraction – a research project that puts the very visibility of Danish colonial history on the agenda. It is a pleasure to welcome Tinne to our research group.”

Tinne Zenner will start her work at AHC on September 1, 2025. Read more about her practice here.
