Containerakademiety is a studio community for visual artists at Oceanvej 1 in Copenhagen’s Nordhavn, which will be inaugurated in January 2024.
Containerakademiet is situated in a large industrial building, consisting of 30 individual studios as well as two large shared workshops of a total of 160 m2 as well as a meeting room, kitchen, and toilet with shower.
As a tenant, you get your own studio and access to the two large common rooms. A studio on the ground floor is 16 m2 and costs DKK 2.600 per month + VAT + DKK 500 in consumption. The studios on the 1st floor is 16 m2 as well but has higher ceilings. They cost DKK 2.800 per month + VAT + DKK 500 in consumption.
Note that consumption expenses are variable depending on total consumption. The studios are not furnished.
There is 24-hour access to Containerakademiet.

THE ACADEMY
The “Academy” in Containerakademiet refers to the “School of Athens” and the Socratic way of thinking about equal conversation between free people. The studio community will therefore not only be a place for artists to work, but also an intellectual community where a continuous, investigative conversation takes place – among other things through a public program of exhibitions and other events.
It is hoped that several of the applying artists will want to help initiate activities in Containerakademiet. Each year two artists are therefore appointed in Containerakademiet to supervise the preparation of an annual program à minimum six events for a fee of DKK 3,000 per event. When you apply for a studio in Containerakademiet, you must therefore indicate and motivate whether you wish to undertake this work, please see the application form below.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION
You can apply for a studio for two or four years, respectively, and it is then possible to apply for an extension. However, it is possible to have a studio for a maximum of six years.
Artists with a studio in Containerakademiet will be offered membership of AHC with access to workshop facilities when AHC moves to Thoravej 29 in Nordvest in 2025.
Containerakademiet is a commercial foundation. It is therefore necessary as a tenant of a studio to be VAT registered.
It is possible to share your studio with another artist, but please note that only one tenant can be on the lease. It is also possible to sublet your studio for a shorter period upon application.

MORE ABOUT CONTAINERAKADEMIET
The initiator of the project is sculptor and professor Bjørn Nørgaard. The developer and operator is Fonden Containerakademiet, the land has been made available by By & Havn, and the project is supported by the A.P. Møller Foundation, Det Obelske Familiefond and the Augustinus Foundation.
Containerakademiet is built in collaboration with Unionkul, Arcgency and WR Enterprise. AHC manages the studio spaces and takes care of the day-to-day operations as well as the artistic program of exhibitions and other events. Over time, the intention is that the ‘academy’ – the spiritual structure of the place – will be self-organising.
