The overarching theme of the exhibition series THE ONES WHO EXIST DESPITE OF OR BECAUSE OF OR INSTEAD OF OR AFTER THE FACT OF is cultural ecology, highlighting the symbiosis that links us together. “Cultural ecology” in the sense of a metaphor, as a living organism, a balanced environment in which the system is all about interaction and mutual impact. In such a community, the robust nature of certain elements cannot be isolated from the fragility of others.
In the course of four months (May, June, August and September), the artists Emilie Bausager (May), Javier Alvarez Sagredo (June), Banaan Al-Nasser (August) and Laurits Gulløv (September) will take over the windows of Art Hub Copenhagen and assume the role of co-creators of a cultural ecology that has the potential to frame a moment, preserve a fleeting present, encircle the past and imagine alternative futures in which sustainability is a persistent existence subject to change.
How can the interaction between social, cultural, and economic entities be sustainable? The philosopher Timothy Morton summed up ecological awareness as: “some kind of fusion between tenderness and sadness, joy, yearning, longing, horror, laughter, melancholy and weirdness.”
Eventually, art returns to the cycle that made it possible – a reminder that our lives are connected.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
EMILIE BAUSAGER
Emilie Bausager’s (b.1992) practice deals with the fluidity of history, and the impossibility of adequate representation. By employing anachronism as a reoccurring artifice in her work she creates a tension between curiosity, insight, gravity, and humour. Often rooted within landscape, constructed or not, Bausager’s output takes its shape as installation comprised of elements such as stained glass, ceramics, objets trouvé, text, and prints.
Emilie Bausager holds a MFA from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (2019) and has recently been showing works in Augustiana Sculpture Park (Augustenborg), Sydhavn Station (Copenhagen), SOL (Nexø), Den Frie (Copenhagen), and SKAL Contemporary (Skagen).
JAVIER ALVAREZ SAGREDO
Javier Alvarez Sagredo (b.1994) is a Chilean-Swedish multidisciplinary artist. Their practice is based on a continuous search for an aesthetically language that deals with concepts in the field of social and political philosophy. Javier’s artistic work investigates the framework of storytelling and seeks to unleash the repressed voices of youth, minority, and statelessness. Their work acts as a critical observation towards the traditions of contemporary art and how it relates to statelessness, alienation, and noise. Central to their work is the orchestration of personal experiences with material, rhythm, and echo animated in still image.
Javier Alvarez Sagredo holds an MFA (2021) from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. They have recently exhibited at Kunsthal Kongegaarden (Korsør), Udstillingsstedet Sydhavn Station (Copenhagen), Villa Kultur (Copenhagen) and Kummelholmen (Stockholm).
BANAAN AL-NASSER
Banaan Al-Nasser (b. 1982) is a Jordanian/Palestinian mixed-media artist. In her practice, she investigates identity and cultural issues. Banaan Al-Nasser’s works are often decidedly social, poetic and political. Her life experience has led her to juxtapose and examine spirituality, creativity and human values in both the Middle East and the West. Her works often take the form of everyday objects, charged with symbolic value that crosses and challenges national borders, class divisions and cultural narratives.
Banaan Al-Nasser, MFA graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2018. Her works have been exhibited at venues including ARoS Aarhus Art Museum (Aarhus), Fatamorgana (Copenhagen) and Betty Nansen Teatret (Copenhagen).
LAURITS GULLØV
Laurits Malthe Gulløv (b. 1994) is a visual artist based in Copenhagen. He is educated from the School of Sculpture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and and École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-arts in Paris. Gulløv has exhibited his work at several Danish institutions including Art Hub Copenhagen, Nikolaj Kunsthal, Sorø Kunstmuseum and in 2023 he received the Carl Nielsen and Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen Talent prize.
Gulløv’s practice spans many forms of expression and materials, including sculpture, installation, film and graphic works on paper. His works deal with the structural and psychological circumstances that shape and affect our being in the modern world, often with references to geology, language and digitality.
