boma pak (KR)

Artist

boma pak (b. 1988) explores the sense of the non-existence of the world through the medium of light and matter. The artist’s works revolve around the (im)materiality and the forces of atmosphere (impression, mood, moment, feeling, etc.) and are created through the process of repetition and replication. These concepts are materialized as external events through the use of various media and proliferating identities and new articulations are sought. The artist also works as a perfumer at Maatter, pursuing works that engage a variety of sensory experiences.

pak has held several solo exhibitions, including Baby (project space SARUBIA, Seoul, 2023), Ritual of Matter (Leeum Museum of Art, Seoul, 2023), Mercy, Boma Pak: Paintings and Matters 19xx2022 (YPC SPACE, Seoul, 2022), and Sophie Etulips Xylang Co., (online, 2021). The artist has also presented various performances, such as AD- Light and Shadows merged into the eyes of the baby as she was born and opened her eyes-Fig. 1, 2, 5, 10 & fldjf tiles (Cheongdam Fashion Street, Seoul, 2023) and Opera: Sky Blue Canon Infinitus (Leeum Museum of Art, Seoul, 2023).

Performance for Gathering 2025: Lemon Loewe Distribution

To distribute ‘Lemon Loewe,’ boma pak serves as a being who carries the sensory language used in the process of consumption. This work takes place in the cafeteria of Art Hub Copenhagen. Wearing a lemon-colored wig, she promotes the work through flyers at various locations—inside the building, along her route from accommodations to the museum, and anywhere she visits—days before the showcase begins, immediately documenting these moments on social media. The flyers advertise ‘Lemon Loewe Hand Massage – 2-10 Euros.’

During the showcase period, boma pak commutes to the cafeteria to promote ‘Lemon Loewe.’ This is conducted like a ‘ritual.’ For instance, she greets visitors, whispers “close your eyes, listen to the Lemon Loewe sound,” plays lemon sounds, binds the visitor with lemon ribbons, and massages their hands with lemon-scented oil while conversing. At the end of this ‘ritual,’ she stamps the visitor’s arm with a ‘Loewe’ logo stamp. A camera is installed to record and live stream the performance on the multi-disciplinary arts account. This act is transacted for 2-10 euros, with the price determined by the visitor.

While her previous work combined readily consumable images and roles to create “a situation where lemon seems present despite its absence,” this work stages a situation where, despite the absence of ‘lemon,’ the ‘sensory experience surrounding lemon’ consists solely of the sensations we typically consume for the core substance, and these sensations themselves are distributed (exchanged). The ‘massage’ work was previously performed by appointment at her 2020 solo exhibition “Beige Men Smoking Free” (Capa Life, Seoul), and she wanted to develop it further. At that time, the work was a massage service by ‘dancer qhak,’ one of her various identities, but it was conducted conservatively due to the beginning of COVID, and she felt there were still sexual hurdles for such work in Korea. All applicants were women. She is very excited to conduct this work in Copenhagen and wants to experiment with how different it can be from Korea.
