LILITH artist duo ^(SE)

LILITH is an artist duo consisting of Elin Lundgren and Petter Pettersson.

LILITH constructs visual worlds through intuitive collage-like processes involving performance, film, text, sound, and sculptural installations. In recent years, their work has been largely connected to human inner states and drives in relation to what is happening in our surroundings.

In their works, they aim to propose alternative thought patterns to the agreed-upon reality that we all voluntarily and involuntarily adhere to. Worlds where norms are ambiguous and contradictory, where rules are paradoxical, and where meaning tends to lie somewhere in between rather than being straightforwardly comprehensible. Where what happens in thought and dream is as true as what occurs outside.

In film and performance works, they often involve large groups of individuals with diverse ages and backgrounds. Together, they explore and propose free choreographic patterns, rites, and ceremonial processes in workshop form. they then, akin to film editing, save, repeat, and assemble these into living images of newly invented rites and ceremonies.

The rituals as an act has captivated the duo for a long time as it permeates many of our agreed-upon rules used to construct meaning and belonging during dramatic turning points or simply to create consensus in everyday life, such as rules in games, play, and even stage presentations in all their forms. They are interested in the significance of the rite, both from a micro perspective on society to hold together the small group – family, circle of friends, cult – but also its importance from a global perspective: religion, nation, and ultimately, the significance for a species driven to survive.

At its core, LILITH revolves around universal human issues such as love, longing, and sorrow, driven by the desire to infiltrate the viewer’s consciousness as a disturbance, with the hope of attempting to understand what it means to be human.
