Newsletter #40

Dear reader,

Last summer, we sent five talented artists to New York for a residency, and now, four new artists have been selected to take part in July.

We’re delighted to announce that Zven Balslev, C Clement, Henriette Heise, and Javier Alvarez Sagredo have been selected. You can read more about them and their artistic practices right here via the purple links.

On this occasion, we’re also thrilled to share an incredible text with you, written by artist Laurits Gulløv, who took part in the Summerworks residency programme last year.

The text is based on the diary Laurits kept during the hot month of July in New York in 2024 as he worked to make sense of the material he had travelled there to explore: a collection of photographs taken by his great-great-grandfather in Palestine in the early 1920s.

Laurits Gulløv reflects on his project and the way it is perceived and interpreted through a series of conversations with people in New York—exchanges that shift and challenge his own understanding of the photographs, pushing his artistic process in new directions and impacting his experience of authority and agency.

The text offers a unique insight into the development of an artistic project while also bringing to light the broader scope of an artist’s practice: the myriad of considerations involved, the role of context, questions of critique, representation, solitude and connection.

Below, you’ll find an excerpt from the text in both Danish and English with short films by Marie Louise Taarnskov, and you can click here to read the full version (in Danish only).

We hope you’ll enjoy reading!
