Dierk Schmidt’s installation The Division of the Earth: Tableaux on the Legal Synopsis of the Berlin Africa Conference (2005–2011) centers on the Berlin Conference of 1884, one of the most significant events in modern Western history for the definition and legitimization of colonialism.

The Division of the Earth was first presented at documenta 12 in 2007. Schmidt is now embarking on a new research project that focuses on a contemporary instance of post- or neo-colonial geo-politics, namely the struggle for the Arctic.

In this talk, Schmidt will discuss his deconstruction of history painting, his take on artistic research, and his research trajectory on colonial history and geo-politics.

ABOUT DIERK SCHMIDT

Dierk Schmidt (1965) practices a contextual notion of painting that places great emphasis on research in historical and in particular in “factual space”. A recent series of abstract pictures focuses on the Berlin Africa Conference of 1884/85 from an international rights perspective. A second series uses the module of the museum vitrine–so to speak in a painting with other means–to treat the axes of gaze and discourse in (post)colonial argumentation as well as their power of appropriation and formulas of conflicting claims to possession in relation to objects in ethnological collections.

ABOUT GUILT AND DEBTS

Guilt and Debts is a forum for discussions about identity politics and decolonisation. More information.
