Culture Art Society CAS

Interdisciplinary research platform

Program

CAS Culture Art Society (CAS) is an interdisciplinary research platform that combines critical studies and art theory to research the cultural economy of African archives (continental and diaspora). CAS’s work foregrounds archives of photography, cinema and visual art for a curatorial methodology called memory work – one which facilitates different approaches to institutional and audience engagements with African cultural productions.

CAS was founded as an initiative to disrupt Eurocentric framings of art history, furthermore to support access to archives outside of institutional spaces by employing digital platforms to host a space for the realisation of a free and open approach to arts education informed by archival engagement. Thus, a driving force to CAS’s work is the centering of decolonial paradigms to bring into focus the art historiography, theory, and practices of cultural workers of African descent for public programming and exhibition projects.
