Program

The Danish/Icelandic artist Sóley Ragnarsdóttir (b. 1991) lives and works in Thy. She is a graduate of the Städelschule in Germany, where her teachers were Amy Sillman and Monika Baer.

Ragnarsdóttir has a sculptural approach to painting, and her works, painted and ornamented with both synthetic and organic materials, hover between figuration and abstraction. She mixes acrylic and epoxy with shells, amber and sea-sanded shards of glass on surfaces of wood, canvas and napkins. Alluding to the Britain’s Arts & Crafts movement and the United States’ Pattern and Decoration movement, she investigates the nature of decoration and its structure.

What fascinates Ragnarsdóttir is the connections between different materials, paving the way for a sensuous kind of movement that makes us think about a greater entity, in which contradictions can coexist.
