Various figures wander onto the stage and replace one another on the same chair. They appear distinct, bizarre, and alien at first glance, but they have one thing in common: They are shaped by visual artist Kristoffer Akselbo, and they all exhibit some of the same unsettling emotions: aggression, frustration, compassion, and hopelessness. They are a kind of heralds of disaster.
In this film, released by Art Hub Copenhagen under the title Artistic Practice, Kristoffer Akselbo conveys his art and, more specifically, the performative characters – or “avatars”, as he calls them – that inhabit his installation works.
ABOUT KRISTOFFER AKSELBO
Kristoffer Akselbo is a graduate of The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and is currently a professor at The Funen Art Academy. He has exhibited at venues including the Kunstmuseum Bonn, SMK in Copenhagen, Kunsthal Aarhus, Ringsted Gallery, Nikolaj Kunsthal in Copenhagen, Cabaret Voltaire in Zürich, and Aspen Art Museum in the USA. In 2022, Akselbo also created the solo exhibition WDB2 at Kunsthal Kongegaarden, Korsør, which was awarded by the Danish Arts Foundation. Some of his key works include: Monster A.S.I.C.S., 2023, Inter Public, Copenhagen; WDB2, 2022, Kongegaarden, Korsør; Grendel, 2021, The Performance Agency, Den Frie Exhibition Building and Husets Theater, Copenhagen; ENSCONCED, 2020, SMK; and It’s The End Of The World As We Know It, 2019, Vega Arts, Copenhagen.
ABOUT ARTISTIC PRACTICE
Artistic Practice is a communication program for professional, established visual artists in Denmark who have proven groundbreaking and innovative. They have predominantly exhibited in Denmark but are considered to have the potential to reach an international audience.
The program revolves around a video portrait that focuses intently on an individual artist’s practice with the intent to communicate it. In addition, there’s support and coaching offered to build an international network.
Artists are selected by a jury, so it’s not possible to apply for inclusion in the program. Artistic Practice is conducted in collaboration with editor and project manager Karina Lykkesborg.
The program was initiated by the Bikuben Foundation and was run by the foundation itself from 2019 to 2022. Artistic Practice continues to be supported by the Bikuben Foundation.
