Ylva Habel (PhD) is an independent media and film studies researcher, and her academic and cultural work is situated at the interface between media and cultural history, postcolonial theory, and critical whiteness studies. Since her dissertation “Modern media, modern audiences: Mass media and social engineering in the 1930s Swedish welfare state,” she has recurrently published texts engaging with three interrelated areas: Swedish exceptionalism, the Black diaspora in Sweden, and material cultures revolving around colonial and eugenic amnesia. Her current research critically discusses the many ways in which denied colonial memories repeatedly come to the surface through “trinkets of Empire,” i.e., everyday objects or ornaments.
