Wintanworks is an artist-in-residence and exchange programme – a collaboration between Art Hub Copenhagen (AHC) in Denmark and the blaxTARLINES KUMASI collective in Ghana. Deadline for applications is 26 October 2023.
Wintanworks is an artist-in-residence and exchange programme – a collaboration between Art Hub Copenhagen (AHC) in Denmark and the blaxTARLINES KUMASI collective in Ghana. This residency programme provides two artists – one from each country – with the opportunity to ‘swap’ locations for one month, each of them thereby spending time in another art scene and another cultural environment.
Art Hub Copenhagen works to give time, space and language to contemporary art and artists, and the overall idea of Wintanworks is to engender and support artistic exchange and networking between north and south – between Denmark and Ghana.
The programme comprises accommodation in Accra/Kumasi and Copenhagen and a planned programme that allows for time to conduct research, form a new network, and give a public talk.
The name ‘Wintanworks’ is a portmanteau word composed of ‘Winter’ and ‘Harmattan’, meaning ‘desert wind’, indicating quite simply that the residency takes place in February-March, when cold winds blow in Denmark, and strong and Sahara dusty winds prevail in West Africa.
THE PROGRAM (from the beginning of February to the end of March), organised by blaxTARLINES KUMASI
The artist will arrive in Accra and be welcomed by Elolo Bosoka of blaxTARLINES KUMASI. The artist will be taken to their accommodation before being introduced to the Accra art scene with tours of galleries and artist-run exhibition spaces.
Onward journey to Kumasi with Elolo Bosoka. The artist will be shown their accommodation and then introduced to the studio and the founding members of blaxTARLINES KUMASI. Studio visits and meetings with relevant artists and curators. The artist will also meet the programme’s selected Ghanaian resident before they set off for Copenhagen. The Danish artist is expected to give an introduction to their practice and selected works.
Opportunity for time to work in the studio and conduct research. Excursion to Red Clay Studio, SCCA Tamala and Nkrumah Volini. Possible meetings with relevant artists or curators.
Journey back to Accra to give a talk at the Foundation for Contemporary Art (FCA). Later in the week, the artist will fly back to Copenhagen, where – to conclude – they will meet the Ghanaian resident again.
WHO CAN APPLY?
Any professional visual artist can apply to take part in this residency. You must be a graduate of the Jutland Art Academy, the Funen Art Academy or the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts or have a similar visual arts education or background. It is not possible to apply as a duo or collective.
Currently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark advises against all non-essential travel to the northern regions of Ghana. All travel related to Wintanworks will take place in southern Ghana. Based on guidance from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we believe that it will be safe for our resident to travel there. We will of course monitor the situation on an on-going basis.
