Chalana Brown (US Virgin Islands)

Artist

Chalana Brown is an artist who is inventive in the exploration of community memory and history through the compelling medium of digital collage and documentary-style videos. With a distinct focus on community memory, Chalana has gained recognition for their work as an artist and as the director of the Division of Virgin Islands Cultural Education within the Virgin Islands Department of Education. As an ancestral Virgin Islander with a personal connection to ancestors who endured enslavement during Danish rule in the Danish West Indies and continued families as freed persons in the Danish West Indies, Chalana embarks on a powerful mission to piece together fragmented identities and reclaim community memory. Her artistic endeavors serve as a testament to the resilience of the Virgin Islands and their commitment to providing a voice to counter-narratives, to challenge norms, and to inspire Virgin Islands futurism.
